Mr Toad's First Wild Ride

By on Tuesday, May 06, 2008

Last night my wife and I took our Honda CRV tow vehicle on it's first ride. I have to admit, it was a nervous experience at first. But after a while I started to get the hang of it. At first, I found myself constantly glancing at the back-up camera to see if the car was still there. Of course, it was.

Hooking up, I double checked and triple checked everything. Drove a few feet and then I checked it again before driving off. The RoadMaster Sterling tow bar and Even Brake system worked like a champ. I had to wire up the Even Brake transmitter and install the brake light relay in line with the brake switch behind the brake pedal. The hardest part was trying to work under the dash board of the CRV. There was a lot of grunting and some expletives uttered. But now, you wouldn't even know I was there.

The Ultraguard full length mud flap I installed looks great also. I ended up hanging it from the frame about a foot from the rear of the coach. I also had to take about 6 inches off of the height to get the right ground clearance of approximately 4 inches.

When driving, I found that the tow setting on the Ford E450 worked great also. It would down shift automatically when decelerating and use the transmission more to control the speed of the coach. I thought I would have to down shift manually when towing.

I'm ready for the road now. We'll be testing it out on a longer drive this weekend. Stay tuned. -T
