"Keep On The Level" - My RV Leveling Issues

By on Wednesday, May 14, 2008

Last weekend, I experienced a bit of RV envy. Some of you may have had a similar experience.

We went camping with Deuce last weekend. Deuce has a nice 34' Winnebago Adventurer that we found out is roomy enough and perfect for Wii Bowling matches. But that's another story. Anyway, we arrived at Harmony Lakeside RV Park near Mossyrock, WA and parked our rigs next to each other facing the lake. The sites were not perfectly level so I found myself trying to position the motor home in the most level position I could find - which was still, in fact, not perfectly level.

Not to worry, having been in this situation before, I knew I had a crafty solution to this problem. I went to the storage compartment at the rear of the coach and took out a few pieces of carefully cut 2x12 wood pieces. I'll just place under the front tires, drive up onto them, and "SHAZAM!", I'm perfectly positioned. "No problem" I thought, because I'd done this before.

As I made several frustrating and humbling attempts to get the coach positioned just right, Deuce was all done. His coach was all level, powered up, and ready for happy hour. How so? you ask. Some of you already know the answer. Well, shortly after pulling into his spot, Deuce reaches over to his hydraulic leveling controls and with a quick "VVVVT" and another "VVVT--VVVT" sound. He was done. There I was with my ghetto wood blocks, still a bit cock-eyed, thinking "I need a better solution".

So I've done some research and have decided that leveling wedges and not "blocks" are what I need. I thought of getting those orange leveling blocks that come in packs of 10 or so, but have read that they don't hold up that well. Leveling wedges would allow me to just drive up on them until I reach the desired height. I'm looking at either the "Tri-Leveler" (right photo) or Snaps Leveling Wedge. I'll be picking up 4 of those babies before our next trip. Nevertheless, I was diggin those hydraulic jacks.

Rock on Deuce! -T

Update (April 09)
Since I wrote this blog post, I've tried both the Tri-Leveler and the Snaps Wedges. My hands down favorite is the Tri-Levelers. I keep 3 with me at all times (two for the rear and 1 for the front) and leveling is very quick and easy.

  1. There you go T, out of the ghetto and into the level world. I must admit, hydraulics are nice though.

  2. Wood blocks can always "get the job done", however, something as cheap and simple such as wheel chocks can greatly increase the durability and assurance compared to the normal wood blocks. RV leveling jacks are a lot more expensive, but they can save a lot of time instead of just backing up onto the chocks. It all depends on how much money the RVer is willing to pay. MakariosRV.com is where I search first for my rv leveling needs.
