I'm going to be doing some dry camping this weekend and am trying to maximize my battery life. My Four Winds 31F motor home came with only one house battery and I was looking for a way to monitor its charge when there's no power hookup (or when not running the generator).
I found an inexpensive digital battery monitor (see picture - left) that I can plug into the auxiliary cigarette lighter socket I wired into my house 12V circuit. It should let me know when I'm getting low on juice and in need of a re-charge. The battery monitor on my panel only gives me 3 lights and is in no way an accurate read of my actual charge.
When the battery gets low, I'm planning to fire up the generator and get re-charged. However, I read
in a forum that the charge circuit on your generator is not that powerful and takes forever to fully re-charge your house battery. The recommendation was to connect a compact rapid battery charger to your house battery while running the generator. I was in need of a good battery charger anyway, so I picked one up this morning. The one I got (see picture - right) was designed with enough amps to charge marine or RV batteries so it should do the trick. Hopefully, I'll have a "fully charged" weekend at the ocean. -T
Love the blog, I have been wanting an RV for a long time... I usually just rent them. Looks like you're having a lot of fun, I totally dig it.

Yes...we are totally digging it. We've always vacationed in far away places like Mexico. I didn't realize how much I would really love the open road and exploring our beautiful country with my wife and teenage kids. Being in my early 40s, I'm glad to be starting young (in RV years). My wife and kids are digging it also. We're always looking forward to the next trip.

There you go. That should do the trick and much more reliable than the stock monitor in your rig.
